It has been a challenging week at all levels but this morning the College is saddened to hear of the death of Dr Michael Boland, yesterday after a long illness.

At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Susan, their children Eve, Mary Jane, Mike and the Boland family.

Our sympathies also to all his friends and colleagues particularly those who have had a long history of dedication to the profession and to the College. Michael was the inspiration for the foundation of the new Irish College and along with the other foundation members created what we all have today in ICGP. He was the first Chair of the ICGP. He was a great mentor and role model to his peers and to GPs who follow in his and their footsteps. Michael was the first Director of the College’s Postgraduate Resource Centre and brought honour both to the College and Ireland during his term as President of WONCA (from 2001 to 2004).

It is particularly sad at this time when the normal rituals and customs that enable us honour the deceased, support the bereaved and celebrate the life of a great man; cannot be fulfilled. We will find other ways of so doing.

Honourable, compassionate, a life well lived and a difference made will be his epitaph.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h’anam dílis.

Dr Mary Favier,

Dr John Cox,

On behalf of College Board, Management, Staff, Council and Membership.
