(12th May 2020) The Irish College of General Practitioners has welcomed the announcement of a Civic Award for Dr. Nuala O’Connor by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr John Sheehan.

Cork city GP Dr.Nuala O’Connor will receive her award for her contribution to awareness of infection control and hand hygiene, a role that has brought her to national prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. O’Connor is the ICGP’s Clinical Lead on Prevention of Healthcare-Associated Infection/ Anti-microbial drug resistance (HCAI/AMR).

She is the GP lead on a national programme which aims to ensure that all patients receive high quality care in a safe environment and promotes good hygiene practices to prevent HCAI.

She was one of the chief authors of the first Infection Prevention & Control guidance for doctors working in Irish general practice.

Dr. O’Connor graduated from UCC in 1986 and is a founding member of the Elmwood Family Practice in Cork city. 

The CEO of the ICGP, Mr Fintan Foy, said: “We are very proud of the work that Dr. Nuala O’Connor does and we are delighted with this award which recognises her contribution to the importance of infection control and hand hygiene. Dr O’Connor has played a huge role in helping GPs prepare for the COVID-19 pandemic and she has shared her vast knowledge generously in the last few months.”

The President of the ICGP, Dr Mary Favier (also a Cork-based GP), said: “We’re delighted that Dr Nuala O’Connor’s work in infection control and awareness of antimicrobial resistance is being recognised by the Lord Mayor of Cork. We look forward to celebrating this with her in a socially-distanced way in the near future.” ENDS
