Doctor burnout during COVID-19 to be discussed at ICGP’s Winter Meeting

Helping avoid medical errors and adverse events is a central theme of this year’s virtual gathering –  “General Practice – the Beating Heart of Healthcare.”

The Winter Meeting of the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP) will be held virtually on Saturday 13th November from 9.30am to 1pm (GMT), with themes on doctor burnout during this pandemic and ways to avoid medical errors.

Leading patient safety advocate Ms Margaret Murphy will tell the tragic story of the untimely death of her son following a series of medical mishaps and system errors.

Dr Paul Bowie of Glasgow University, a leading expert on adverse events, will describe how to avoid adverse events in general practice.

The Medical Director of the ICGP, Dr Diarmuid Quinlan, said “GPs are seeing unprecedented levels of demand from patients, a combination of the COVID-19 pandemic, winter respiratory illnesses and the backlog from delays during the lockdown.”

He added “We know that burnout is a very timely topic and we look forward to practical tips from expert Dr Suzy Jordache, as well as hearing the experience of Ms Margaret Murphy, from WHO Patients for Patient Safety”.
